They say you can never go home again. If only that were true...

Game store owner and nerd sorceress extraordinaire Jade Crow knows death stalks her in the form of her murderous ex-lover, Samir, a sorcerer who wants to eat her heart and take her power. With the help of her friends, and sexy tiger-shifter Alek, Jade trains for the inevitable confrontation.

Until her estranged father shows up begging for help. Someone or something is murdering the crow shifters of Three Feathers ranch and her father believes sorcery is the only way to stop the killings.

Faced with an unknown foe, a family that exiled her decades before, a deepening relationship with Alek, and Samir's ever-present threat, Jade will need all the power she's gained and then some to stop the Murder of Crows.

Murder of Crows is the second book in the USA Today Bestselling The Twenty-Sided Sorceress urban fantasy series.

This is the second book in The Twenty-Sided Sorceress series, and it was as fun as the first one. These are short, quick reads, but each seems to provide a complete, episodic, story that also advances us closer to the moment Jade must confront her enemy, the sorcerer who once tried to kill her.

As long as you are not tied to reading things in order, because each is a complete story on its own, I think these can be enjoyed in isolation. However, I also think once you’ve met the characters and have spent some time with them, you’ll be happy to seek out other stories in which they exist. I suspect the ability to be read as a standalone will reduce the closer we get to the resolution of the underlying crisis.

In Murder of Crows, though we’ve been given not so pleasant hints at Jade’s background in the first book, her birth family returns in the most awkward way possible. The very people who have rejected her come begging for help, and despite every bit of her being demanding she turn her back and leave them to suffer, Jade does the right, if very difficult, thing.

Her return to the cult where she’d been born is neither comfortable nor restorative. She learns some harsh truths that shake her to her very roots while at the same time solving a serial murder. There is no safety zone here around her family either as choices they’ve made implicate them in the cult’s business as much as any other.

I had my suspicions about the who and even the reason why behind the mystery, but the specifics of how it all came together held many surprises while the push and pull between her history and the person Jade wants to be is lovely.

She’s still not the perfect hero. She makes mistakes and suffers the consequences. She acts without thinking, and all the while, she’s still trying to master her sorcery well enough to survive and even win an encounter with her enemy, and former lover, the sorcerer Samir. I also like the explanation for why he hasn’t come all forces blazing to kill her already before she has time to prepare as it makes perfect sense and doesn’t undermine the individual story at all.

Oh, and the beginning was wonderful, both in what was going on and the way it misleads the reader at first.

I’m happily on my way to the next installment.

Murder of Crows The TwentySided Sorceress Book 2 eBook Annie Bellet Reviews

First let me say that I really appreciate authors who continue their stories with characters that you have already come to know. In this second story, we learn more about the background of the main character, Jade Crow, whose family had sent her away because she can not shift into the form of a crow like all the people in her tribe. We find out that the man she has called father for all of her life is not her biological father. Still when he shows up at her door pleading for help, Jade can not refuse him. "Someone or something is murdering the crow shifters of Three Feathers ranch and her father believes sorcery is the only way to stop the killings." With the help of shifter enforcer Alek, who is also searching for a missing friend(another Enforcer), Jade learns the shocking fate of others who like her could not shift; as well as the fact that Samir, her former mentor, now enemy, is using others to try to get to her.
Annie Bellet can write a really good quality story and create a good reading time. The only negative is the price point is really high for amount of reading/pages. If you compare the reading time to going to a movie theatre the book is a little cheaper (just a little bit cheaper but nearly the same time spent in each). There are just so many other books that give 2 or 3 times or more the amount of pages for the price. The price point is the most galling factor to me. I guess you are paying for the quality not the quantity!! Glad I have caught these on sale to get this far otherwise I would not have tried reading them.
I wasn't too impressed with the 1st book but the heroine kinda intrigued me because of her reluctance to using her magic. The dangerous result to her person if she raised the attention of her old mentor/boyfriend. I do not remember if the 1st book related the information that she was a sorceress, if one had read more books of this type, it would have been self-evident I supposeMurder of Crows (The Twenty-Sided Sorceress Book 2). This novel continues the development of the heroine's character, exposing more of her skills and intelligence in resolving situations as they develop. Even though this is not among my favorite genre of fiction, I did enjoy this novel very much. I am willing to continue purchasing and reading this author's novels of The Twenty-Sided Sorceress Books.
I found this book to be much easier to understand!! I personally was missing a few key points in my comprehension. It quickly became a very personal eye opener for me.
As far as the novel, goes and it's story it was a serious page turner!! I read both this book very easily. It a wonderful read! Once I dug down deep in myself, as Jade was going through her personal struggles did I truly understand more of why the story was written!
It's a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves this genre and needs to understand personal struggles more completely.
To Annie the author, thank you for your due diligence in writing this book! This has personally opened my eyes to the struggles my son is going through in his personal life. You have helped me understand the help he needs, to understand the world around him!
